ADHO MUKHA MATSYA ASANA OR DOWNWARD FACING FISH POSE

The name given to every Asana derives its inspiration from nature. Seeing as this pose happens to look like a downward facing fish. Hence it is known as Adho Mukha Matsya Asana. The common feeling is that both the Adho Mukha Matsya Asana and the Matsya Asana are destroyers of several diseases.

TECHNIQUE

Sit on the floor in Padma Asana with cross legged the bottom portion up.

You may also squat on the floor in Swastika Asana.

Bend forward and lay down stretching your hands.

There is external pressure on the stomach.

Remain in that position as long as you are comfortable.

Come back to Padma Asana or Swastika Asana.
Repeat two more times.

BENEFITS

This pose is beneficial for those suffering from asthma and other respiratory ailments as it opens thorax, chest and clears the windpipe.

It also helps in reliving sciatic pain and backaches as it strengthens the muscles of the upper back and those behind the neck and shoulders.

This Asana also helps in overcoming fatigue and menstrual pain as it stretches and tones the deep hip flexors and the muscles between your ribs.

It also helps in overcoming constipation and improving digestion as it stretches and stimulates the abdominal organs.

Due to the arcing of your back your chest is thrust out which improves posture and carriage.
